VAIAS / GR801 neuromorphic accelerator validation
This project focuses on enabling neuromorphic space-computing research.
VAIAS develops and validates GR801-based neuromorphic computing for future space missions. Frontgrade Gaisler coordinates radiation validation while Rapidity Space develops event-based perception and compiler support. GR801 combines NOEL-V RISC-V processing with BrainChip Akida. The November 2025–November 2027 research programme does not identify a launched VAIAS spacecraft or completed orbital demonstration.

Manual review 2 Nov 2026. Programme, agency, issuer and October 2026 product brief compared on November 2. Research architecture, workshares and grant contribution recorded. Product engineering references remain separate from VAIAS results and flight configurations. Primary body last observed not available. Source monitoring: unavailable. Source collection and substantive profile review are separate checks. Plans and dates may change.
Completed radiation-validation results, selected flight missions and actual in-orbit performance are not established.
Programme material does not establish installed system RAM, storage, arithmetic throughput, absolute electrical power, cooling capacity, spacecraft mass/orbit or mission duration.
GR801 product design references are under development and are kept separate from VAIAS results and flight configurations.
SEK 7.6 million total programme budget is not financing received. Only the separately identified SEK 2.4 million Vinnova contribution is counted.
Project updates
Verified announcements and milestones linked to this project, newest first.
Gaisler's October 2026 GR801 brief describes a single-core NOEL-V processor with Akida neuromorphic acceleration, separate memory allocations and internal interfaces. Product development remains ongoing. Package, temperature-grade and radiation references are retained separately from VAIAS results and any flight configuration.
Vinnova records a USD 245,886 (SEK 2.4 million) contribution for Frontgrade Gaisler-led VAIAS, reference 2025-02991. The ongoing November 2025–November 2027 project covers radiation validation and Rapidity software work. This contribution is distinct from the programme's USD 778,640 (SEK 7.6 million) total budget. The agency page's September 9, 2026 update date is not an award date.
Frontgrade Gaisler and Rapidity Space announced VAIAS research on December 16, 2025. The work combines NOEL-V and Akida processing with event-based perception, radiation validation and compiler extensions for future space missions. No completed orbital VAIAS result is announced.
