HYPER-EDGE onboard-computing mission study

This project focuses on named orbital computing research.

HYPER-EDGE is an ESA SysNova pre-Phase-A research study of hyperdimensional onboard computing for wildfire detection and air-quality assessment. Betadynamiq leads mission architecture, Grid+ develops processing and benchmarking, and IntelligEarth leads user requirements and the technology roadmap. Its four-satellite reference constellation is a concept, not launched hardware or an operating data-center service.

NEXT MILESTONE

Confirm final-review deliverables and disclosed next-phase decision. No flight date is established.

Manual review with evidence gaps 28 Oct 2026. Compared the current ESA Φ-lab project page. The four-satellite reference architecture, modeled budgets, consortium roles and April–October 2026 study window are supported. The page still describes the October final review and benchmark deliverables prospectively, so completion and final benchmark results remain unresolved; no flight commitment is established. Primary body last observed not available. Source monitoring: ongoing. Source collection and substantive profile review are separate checks. Plans and dates may change.

WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN
  • No committed flight, launch date, spacecraft supplier or operating shared compute service is established.
  • The October 2026 final review is listed prospectively. Completion and benchmark results are not confirmed on the reviewed page.
  • The study funding amount is undisclosed. EUR 50 million is the reference mission cost envelope excluding launch, not funding awarded.
  • Latency, detection accuracy and availability are study objectives or modeled budgets, not measured in-orbit performance.

ESA-listed HYPER-EDGE study develops a four-satellite onboard-computing concept (opens in a new tab)

ESA's Φ-lab database describes HYPER-EDGE as a funded April–October 2026 pre-Phase-A study led by Betadynamiq, with Grid+ and IntelligEarth. It studies hyperdimensional onboard processing for a four-satellite wildfire and air-quality mission. The performance figures and flight architecture are study targets, not demonstrated orbital results. The page is undated and does not confirm final-review completion.
